Scholarships played a key role in determining Catherine Matthys' career goals-becoming a physician and establishing a health clinic in Tanzania.

The young Portland woman, who graduated from the UO in 2008 with a double major in math and chemistry, received both the Alice Blakely Brink Presidential Scholarship and a Bowerman Scholarship.

Because of the scholarships, she was able to work fewer hours and to participate in campus activities including pre-med and global health student interest groups and the EMU Cultural Forum. She also had the chance to conduct scientific research and to tutor other students. Those opportunities "basically changed where my life was going," says Matthys.

After graduation, Matthys moved to Tanzania to work in a hospital with local doctors, conduct a needs assessment for health care volunteers at hospitals around the country, and establish an HIV-AIDS prevention program.
