The First Home Track Meet of the Season

April 10, 2010 - 10:08 PM

Today, Collin, Jessica, and I went to the first home track meet of the season. I would be lying to you if I said I gave a damn about track, but I am no fool. I know that attending a track meet at Hayward Field has a lot of historical significance.

So when the season rolls around, Collin poses the inevitable question, "Do you want to go to the track meet this weekend?" Oh god.

Yes.

Please.

Let's go sit there in between warm and chilly getting ironically sunburned watching 12 things going on at once for at least three hours. Fun.

But I thought to myself, "Maybe I can pack a lunch and make it sort of interesting for myself." Any time get to play homemaker, I am game. Unfortunately, this morning, I decided to play teenager and slept in until I had 25 minutes to get ready for the meet.

So instead, Collin and I grabbed some coffees and walked across campus to the field.

I invited Jessica so that I would have someone to talk to during the meet. Collin's attention is impossible to divide when there are so many things going on-especially if those things are sports. No wonder he likes it. It is the highest concentration of sports known to man (except the Olympics, I suppose, but even then, they are separated by commercials).

We sat and watched the sports go on and on for three hours. And I must admit that it wasn't horrible. I did enjoy watching some of the events, and it is fun to see Collin so stimulated. I also like to listen to him talk about things he knows so much about. It makes me happy to see him happy.

While we were sitting there, Collin pointed to the slightly-more-than-middle-aged folks raking sand and moving hurdles into place. That was when he said that he has often fancied the thought of retiring to attend and help manage track meets. It melted my heart because I looked around and saw the sun shining down on who appeared to be happy people doing relaxing and rewarding things in their retirement. I loved the thought of being able to do something like that with Collin while we grow old together.

We won both the women's and the men's meets, so it was a rewarding time for everyone at the first home invitational. And another great start to a season in Track Town USA.
