Sometimes all you need is a good clean-me-up

January 13, 2010 - 10:34 PM

After several days of sleepovers and an apartment full of friends and boyfriends, it was time for me to demand a break.

Even though I had agreed to and was sort of intrigued by attending the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)'s Food for Lane County Canned Food Drive Spelling Bee (it's exhausting just writing it) I was, well, too exhausted to attend.

It wasn't that I was necessarily too tired to go; it was that all of my willingness to interact with others had been tapped.

I got home and had dinner with the love of my life, we watched some Sex and the City (episodes that he got me on DVD for Christmas as food for the soul), and kissed him goodbye.

After he went home, I got to work. After throwing birthday parties and slumber parties in my apartment, it was time for a deep clean.

In boarding school, we had daily upkeep jobs that made sure our quarters were always neat and clean, and then, every other week, it was deep-clean weekend.

Tonight was deep-clean night.

Alone, I laundered my sheets; swept, Swiffered, and vacuumed the floors; Lysoled every kitchen and bathroom surface; tidied each of the rooms; Windexed mirrors, and made myself feel one hell of a lot better.

I felt like the remnants of the suffocating social life I had been having were hanging on in the form of dust, litter, and grime.

Now that I have cleaned my place, I feel more in control. I know that I sound somewhat compulsive, but sometimes you just have to do what feels right.

College has given me an opportunity to see what kind of an adult I am going to be. Apparently, I am going to be the type that keeps a clean house.
