Friday Before Finals

May 6, 2010 - 1:21 AM

My God was there a lot to do on Friday night.

For Flux, we had arranged to go to the Salsa Night at the Vet's Club on Willamette Street.

One of our multimedia content producers had done an expose on the dance class and event that happens every first Friday of the month, so to celebrate her and all of the other content producers' hard work, we decided to go try our toes at salsa.

This was a great plan, except no one showed up.

Collin, Jessica, and I went to the lesson, and not even the girl who did the piece was there. After a while, once the class was over and free-dance had begun, Amy finally arrived, but no one else from Flux was going to attend.

After a couple dozen dances, we all decided that we had done our damndest on the dance floor and that it was time to go on to other Friday night shenanigans.

Our somewhat competing publication in the journalism school, Ethos Magazine, was holding a fundraiser in the form of a house party. Admission was one dollar, and Jell-O shots were 50 cents each. People were shoulder-to-shoulder, sweating and drinking against each other and squirming around the house without direction. Being sober, I looked around bemused and slightly annoyed. I found the editor in chief of Ethos and congratulated him on his most recent issue, which was quite impressive.

Finally, my friends and I decided that the scene was not ours, and hurried off to the rumored midnight concert from the University of Oregon's men's a cappella group On the Rocks.

When we got there, the EMU ampitheater was overflowing with people holding glowsticks enjoying the sweet falsetto sounds. However, the sweet was paired with sour because after we watched for a while, it became apparent that the boys had had a few too many before hitting the stage and the lyrics were falling apart. After several poorly sung songs we didn't recognize, we decided that it was time to make our way to Max's bar.

Every night at 2 a.m., closing time at Max's is rung in with a loud, proud, and cloudy sing along session to "Sweet Caroline." We thought we would make it there, but one of our friends was too young to go in, so I took him home, and decided to turn in.

Jessica stayed out for the night, and made more memories on her way out of Max's.

It was an incredible night. Everything we did was very loosely affiliated with the university, and it was as raw a college experience as it could be. No one got hurt, but nearly no one was sober. Some went home, and some stayed out. All in all, it was a grand night at Oregon.
