Diamond Days

This spring, Flux magazine was asked to participate in the annual Diamond Days event put on by the Greek system on campus that raises money for a charity by holding a softball tournament.

Being the editor in chief, I thought that it would foster a sense of community to involve our magazine. So as the weeks leading up to the event came and went, practices went unheld, and preparation was thrown to the wind.

When the time came to play the game this weekend, I found myself wondering if participating in the event was a good idea after all.

The day of the game, about half of the people showed up. But those of us who did were faced with the task of integrating ourselves socially with the Greek types who were flooding the field. Needless to say, this wasn't seamless.

We Fluxers had to fight to get to the plate to bat, and we had to elbow our way on to the field to play a position. Eventually, we got pushy enough to get some playing time.

In the end, our team lost, but I was proved right about my assumptions about mingling with fraternities and sororities: that they don't have time for you unless you've literally paid your dues.

However, a few Fluxers were able to go out to lunch together and get to know each other a little better, which was worth the afternoon of fumbling around a baseball diamond.
