The Perks of Being an Advertising Major

Tori M.

January 30, 2011 - 8:30 PM

I love being an advertising major. It has given me the chance to work with a number of various clients. I have worked with the Oregon Track Club, Next Step Recycling and Papa John's pizza. For my media planning class, we had to create a media plan for the 2011-2012 year for Papa John's pizza. This means we decided which types of media Papa John's should utilize for the year and how often each medium would run.

Our target audience was college students so we came up with fun and creative ways to get students to buy Papa John's pizza. We came up with different social media strategies and a number of different promotions. The research I had to conduct made this project very fun. When I say research I don't mean crunching numbers. Because my client was a pizza company, I had to check out what their competitors were doing. This means that my roommates and I consumed a lot of pizza to determine which pizza was best. I even held a blind fold taste test to gain some of my friend's opinions on which pizza they preferred.

After completing the research, I found that Papa John's was the favorite among the pizza chains while Track Town Pizza remained the most popular among the local pizzerias. Unfortunately I finished my project so I no longer can conduct my "very difficult" research but it was very fun while it lasted. I look forward to future clients I will be able to work with!

Sunshine in Eugene

January has been a very sunny month and it's made for a very fun winter! I love when the sun is out. Everyone on campus is out and about and it's fun to utilize the fun outdoor activities that Eugene has to offer. This past weekend my roommates and I went on a bike ride to Autzen and hiked Spencer's Butte.

On Friday we were going to go to the gym but decided to hike Spencer's Butte instead because it was such a nice day outside. For anyone who has not hiked Spencer's Butte, it's definitely a must in Eugene. It takes about thirty minutes to hike to the top. The view from the top is absolutely gorgeous. You can see the entire Eugene campus and Autzen Stadium. It's definitely a great place for a photo-op.

I have been loving the sun this term and I hope that it stays out! I can only hope that spring term will be as nice as winter term has been.

Theater in Eugene

I have been a theater junkie since I was little. I grew up taking dance classes and performing in all of my high school plays. I love going to see shows and I am very excited about the line-up the Hult Center is bringing to Eugene!

During fall term, my friend Sarah and I went to see "The Color Purple". The gospel soundtrack was amazing. This Tuesday I am going with a couple friends to see "Spring Awakening". I saw it a couple of years ago with my mom and I can't wait to see it again. It's a rock and roll musical set in the 1800s.

The new Matthew Knight Arena is also bringing some big names to the stage. Elton John will be performing there on February 17th. Tickets sold out in the first half hour. I can't wait to see more shows in Eugene this year!

Wishing I was back in Whistler

January 23, 2011 - 1:40 PM

As I told you all last week, I spent an amazing Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in Whistler, Canada. There were about fifty girls from my sorority who joined me on this adventure. Needless to say, we came back from this trip with lots of memories. We drove to Portland the night before and stayed at my house and left at 5 a.m. the following morning.

The drive took about nine hours and we were exhausted by the time we finally reached Whistler. When we arrived it was snowing and the village was glowing with Christmas lights. It was the definition of a winter wonderland!

During our three days there we went skiing, intertubing and enjoyed relaxing in the village. On our second night there we made some friends from Australia. They were extremely fun and we ended up spending the rest of the weekend with them! Meeting new people is one of my favorite things about traveling. I have never been to Australia and now I have a place to stay if I choose to go there! It's time to begin planning my next adventure.

BCS National Championship

The Ducks had an incredible football season, holding a 12-0 record all the way until the end. It was a great surprise that the Ducks made it to the BCS National Championship for my senior year. It was such an exciting week on campus. You could feel the buzz on campus as everyone awaited the big game.

A lot of my friends were lucky enough to go to the game in Glendale and it was awesome to hear their stories. I stayed in Eugene and watched it at a friend's house. Although we lost, it was still exciting that we were fortunate to make it so far. The mood in Eugene was pretty somber after the loss, however of course we still love our Ducks.

Now I look forward to cheering on the Ducks in the new Matthew Knight Arena. I've heard that there are some great performances lines up for the new arena, beginning with Elton John in February! What a great way to celebrate the new arena!
