What to be for Halloween?

We are now entering possibly one of the most important seasons at the University of Oregon. Not football season, not fall, not midterms: Halloween costume hunting.

This time of year college students throughout Eugene are beginning to think about their Halloween costumes. While some cop out for store-bought costumes or the banana costume they've worn for the last three years, others, myself included, rack their brains for an ingenious costume idea that will garner praise from their peers.

Last year there was the expected Sarah Palin costume for many female students and Heath Ledger as the Joker for their male counterparts. However, I have to say the most clever I witnessed was what's known in many circles at the U of O as "The Jesus Guy". There's a man that stands out on 13th and University by the EMU amphitheater everyday with a sign that says "God Loves You" and spreads the good word. He's become an iconic figure on campus that is quickly recognizable no matter who you are. Anyway, someone thought to be "The Jesus Guy" and had the costume down perfectly with the matching rain slicker, sign, and drawn-on charcoal beard. It's that kind of costume we strive for but very few attain.

This year there will no doubt be a fair share of Michael Jacksons and Farrah Fawcetts (and other dead celebrities which there are many to choose from), but it's time to think outside the box. I've already heard some ideas tossed around by my roommates and friends with ideas like David Bowie (which one of my roommates all ready has an uncanny likeness to) and Bob Ross (the Joy of Painting guy on public television with the '70s fro). However, I haven't decided who I will be. I went to Goodwill today with the hope that I would find a ridiculous costume or clothing item which would leap out at me and give me a stroke of genius. No luck though.

With 21 days and counting, the pressure's on. I will keep you posted as to what I come up with, but I'm thinking I should turn this into a contest. I'm going to offer this up to any of my readers to submit under the comments section their suggestions for the first ever edition of "What should Peter be for Halloween?!" The winner will receive a signed head shot of yours truly, hedge clippers, and miscellaneous leftovers from my refrigerator. The winner will be announced no later than October 30th. Happy suggesting!

Bonus Quiz:

  • What are you all gonna be for Halloween?
  • What's the best costume you've ever seen?
  • What do you all think is gonna be the hot costume this year?
  • At what age does it become unfashionable to dress up?

I don't know if you remember the show Legends of the Hidden Temple, but I think it would be funny if you were a contestant. Or you should be someone from the Little Rascals I always loved them.
