Walk and Knock!

May 3, 2009 - 3:42 PM

Sorry that both of these entries are coming at the end of this week. It's been an uneventful week and I knew how much I was doing this weekend and I thought it would be more fun to read about than my boring week. So yesterday I collected food for Lane County. It was a great experience. I did it with some of my internship group; it's supposed to help prepare us. Just get used to knocking on doors and talking to strangers. I think there were eighteen of us we collected between seven hundred and eight hundred dry goods for Lane County. We were in teams of two and the first place team (because of course we made it a little bit of a competition) collected 162 dry good items!!! That is so crazy. That's awesome though. My team collected 73. I thought that was good until the top four teams had over 130. Still we did really well and people are going to get help. Afterwards we all met at Jacob's for a barbeque. It would have been better if it had not rained when we first arrived. It made it hard to ignite the coals. We eventually managed though. It was a great time. It was a good bonding experience. Even one of the bigger bosses was in town for the weekend and he sat around hanging out with us all. He is pretty cool. It felt really good to collect all that food for people. It just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I never had much time for community service in high school because I had to work in my free time. With this job there is definitely time for some (as long as my class schedule allows it). I always feel good about myself when I help other people. For me it is kind of a humbling experience. I mean my family is not poor, but we are more than likely lower middle class so I have always gone without stuff that I did not absolutely need. These people that I'm collecting food for are even worse off than I am. It just makes me appreciate my situation more, even though it's not the best place, it is better than some. It also really makes me want to help others more often. Maybe if enough people want to help and do help we could make a difference. I don't know. Tonight I'm suppose to work at this auction that is suppose to help those who are less fortunate in Lane County as well. The only problem is that I tweaked my knee again and I'm not sure I'll be able to shake it off in the next three hours. I might have to sit it out. I think all the walking without my brace yesterday must have weakened my knee and I popped it again getting off my bed this time. Oh well. I'll work harder to help it heal this time I guess. Well homework doesn't do itself and since I have been so busy this weekend I have to do it today. So until next time...
