Getting into the Swing of Things

January 7, 2009 - 2:06 PM

Hey all!!! Well what a day, I tell ya. Mondays and Wednesdays are long. Four classes!! I guess I shouldn't really complain. I mean in high school I had six fifty to sixty minute periods with a half hour lunch somewhere and five minutes passing time, but nevertheless four classes in one day suck when you are use to two or three. Tuesday and Thursday is just one class. Two to three twenty!! It's beautiful. I wish it was earlier though. Ever since starting school I don't sleep in late during the week. I'm use to getting up and going to class. So I'm usually up and showered and ready to go by eleven or twelve. It would be nice if my class was and noon or one. Still I can't complain. I do homework and eat lunch before class. It's weird being in the dorms though. Most of my friends and hall mates are in class so it's desolate in the halls. Its great getting to sleep in twice a week though (getting up between nine and ten as opposed to seven to eight). There are pros and cons. My classes are awesome. My German class is really easy right now. I hope it gets more challenging. It might just be because it's the beginning of the term and I went to Germany, but it just seems too easy for a 312 class. Oh well. Linguistics is super interesting. I like that kind of stuff though. I think this class is kind of like an acquired taste. You have to want to learn where words come from to take it. I think it will help with my German. History sounds like it is going to be great. I love history though. I know most of you out there don't. That's cool, but it's a great way to get General Eds done with. The papers are going to be tougher than last term, but there is only three all together (two due whenever I choose to write them basically) and one final paper. Last term I had to write a one page paper every week. I also really like the professor. He is a nice guy and I think he is going to have a lot of interesting stories to tell. He is Irish so he has this really cool accent. You can totally understand him, but the accent is still there. Then there is this human geography class that I'm taking. I was taking it just to get a science credit, but it sounds like it is going to be a great class. I have only had it once, but its culture and not physical geography. Culture interests me a lot. I think it might come with my love for foreign language. Besides I'm not big into the longitude and latitude of a particular place or region. I want to know why people are the way they are and why poorer countries feel that globalization is more important that using their field space to feed their own. I predict that one has to pay really close attention to lectures and key ideas. I feel like that is how the class is going to be run. The two professors and GTFs (Graduate Teaching Fellows) I have seem great. I think this is going to be a great term. I am looking forward to getting things going and getting more information on all my classes. Well it's late and I'm tired of writing for now. It's been a long day. So until next time...
