University of Oregon

Hello!

I am excited to represent the University of Oregon as a student blogger. Hopefully my day to day activities and interests can help you all understand how much I love this campus. This year, will be my third year at the University of Oregon. I am very pleased and fortunate to be able to attend this college through various scholarships and grants. As a first generation Chinese American, I feel like I have a lot to prove to my parents and myself. I want to succeed as well as gain a better understanding about who I am and where I come from. I believe that college is a place not only to get an education but to discover one's identity and passion.

I am an art student, enrolled in the digital arts program at the university. I always knew I wanted to do something that related to art. Perhaps this is why I am so observant of my surroundings. I always find myself lost in my own thought, overlooking fellow classmates and friends as I walk to class. I know, it's a bad habit, but I find myself fascinated by so many things - from a tree illuminated by its golden leaves, to the numerous events in the streets. Just yesterday a friend was talking to me as we were walking towards campus and I had to apologize for not listening, because I started studying the moon through the gnarled tree branches above us. As you can tell I am easily distracted. Whether it's a good or bad thing, I blame it on my artistic side. As an artist I have this strong urge to study my surroundings and capture it, either in the form of a physical object like a sketch or a memory fused into my head. To give you an idea of what kind of artist I am I also have a online gallery on deviantART. I guess you can say it's an artist blog, but with more images then words. The selected works go back from my senior year in high school. I love working in any medium, and one of my best works was actually a sculpture of a crane I made in high school out of window blinds. Please feel free to check it out and give me some feedback. I view critiques as a chance to grow and develop my creativity.

As a blogger, words and pictures will be my main medium in which to help me express and share these events. I love taking photos of just about anything so expect to see many on my page! Besides discussing things about art or class, I most likely will be writing about my involvement with HKSA, the Hong Kong Student Association. I will be one of two Co-Directors of the group this year. Hopefully I will be able to write an entire entry dedicated to the club soon. Besides HKSA, I have a strong interest in being involved with other student organizations. I think they're a great way to get involve with the campus community and to meet new people. There is also a sense of pride and accomplishment that I get in representing a group or organization. Being a blogger also gives me the opportunity to represent myself as a student of the University of Oregon. I am so excited to share my stories through the Annual Giving's Program throughout the year!

Hi Leah, We are four journalism students who are currently working on a project about the arts program at UO with an emphasis on student produced college art and the logistics that are involved in the funding, planning, managing and exhibition of these various artworks. We were assigned to find bloggers within this arts community who could be resources to learn more. We found your blog and are wondering if you would be interested in answering a few questions about your reason for blogging, your approach and how you manage your blog. Please contact us as soon as possible (preferably before tomorrow night- sorry for the late notice!) with your e-mail address if you are willing to help. Our project is just beginning, but you can view our blog to learn a little bit more. Thanks! Artistic Logistics Team uoartisticlogistics.wordpress.com lmccarth@uoregon.edu
