CMAT stands for Chinese Martial Arts Tournament. It is one of the largest martial arts event held in the United States, drawing nearly 500 participants from across the nation. There were also a few well known martial artists that competed from China. Wu Di, a member of the Beijing Wushu Team graced the carpet with his amazing skills and awesome hair! The event included many divisions from youth, adult and senior. Within these divisions there were different categories that one may compete in, including many styles and weapons that I am not yet familiar with.

The event started Saturday morning and lasted till 10pm. My purpose of competing in CMAT was to do better than I did in the collegiate championships. I felt more confident this time, but unfortunately this did not prevent me from touching the ground...again. My hand on the ground played a big factor in my ending score. My only goal next year is to improve my balance and to do better!

Out of the 24 people who competed from the University of Oregon, our team racked up 10 medals: 3 bronze, 4 silver, and 3 gold. What is most impressive is that out of the 10 won, 8 of these medals belonged to beginners! Almost all the medals were won in the weapons category, which we have only been practicing for about 2 months. I am really proud of everyone! It is very nerve racking to compete among spectators, rivals, and judges. Lots of people made mistakes, including the best. No matter how many times one practices, the only form that matters is the one you do on the carpet. I guess what I'm trying to say is that confidence is the most important thing when you only have one shot to please the judges.

Speaking of carpets, there was only one ring that had a green carpet. Dubbed the "China Carpet," it was only used for advanced competitors. I was fortunate enough to touch it while I was down at the competitors ring. The carpet was so soft that I wouldn't mind sleeping on it! All in all, CMAT was a great experience. I got to meet new people, and form closer bonds with my teammates. I also got to witness the greatest people in the wushu world! Will I go again? Of course, and I will be ready next time!
