Getting My Craft On

I love to get my craft on. In fact, I've gotten a little crazy about it lately. Sometimes I talk so passionately about doing crafts to my friends that I think they think I'm beginning to lose it. I'm guessing that all of the work I do with kids is probably part of what has inspired this love. Wherever it came from though, I'm happy it did. While some people may think that I'm losing it and going craft crazy, I see crafts as a mellow, therapeutic activity that keeps me grounded through it all.

My friend recently introduced me to the world of the sewing machine. It is pretty cool! It scared me a lot at first, but once I got the hang of it, I could just zone out while sewing in all sorts of fun patterns and colors. I recently finished my first sewing craft and am very proud of it. Basically, it is a book made of several different pockets that are put together with all sorts of fun fabrics. I decided to make each pocket in the book a different theme, based on a word. For example, I have a "wish" pocket that is made of out of all sorts of sparkly fabrics and has the word "wish" written on it. I have another pocket that says "create" on it and is made out of bright, crafty fabrics, brads, and synthetic flowers. The book is surrounded with a fabric cover and tied together with fantastically fun ribbons. I plan on putting different things that relate to the different words in each pocket. For example, in my wish pocket, I have a picture of a star that I cut out and I will also write down some of my aspirations and put them in the pocket. It was so fun to make this book. Whenever I was working on it, I would forget about all of my worries, all of my stress from school, and just enjoy the ability to create.

I've also gotten very crafty about journals. I love journals. I have different ones that have different themes. It all started with my gratitude journal. Every day I write down five things that I am grateful for on one of the pages in my journal. However, I could not just stop there, I had to get crafty about it! So, I write it different and with a little pizzazz each time. For example, one day I cut out a piece from a magazine of some blonde hair and I wrote the five things in different strands of the hair. On another day, I drew a flower and had one of the things I was grateful for written in each petal. It is so fun to look back through the days now and see all of these unique creations. It is amazing how good you can feel after just taking five minutes to think about things you are grateful for. Everyone should do it!

So, anyway, that is just a small taste of my craftiness lately. I recommend crafts to everyone. It is so fun to just sit and make something. I think this spring term, I might sign up for one of the classes offered through the UO Craft Center. Yes!
