As I mentioned before, I am taking two art classes this term in an attempt to pull off an art minor by the end of my fifth year. I am taking ART 115 (Surface, Space, and Time) and ART 233 (Drawing). I must say that after only one week, I am so happy that I have decided to do this.
It just feels amazing to actually have time to do art now. My homework is stuff that I actually want to do. I get to be creative and begin to see and think about art in different ways. In my ART 115 class, we had a discussion about seeing past the nouns that we have assigned to objects. It was a fun discussion for me because I was able to draw upon so much of the material I had learned in my last term art history class. I could relate the work that we were now actually doing to that of the masters throughout history. So cool!
In my ART 115 class so far, we have created two self-portraits. One was supposed to be drawn and actually look like us. The other was supposed to be a nonrepresentational collage of us. This means that it could not have any noticeable objects in it. It has to be a symbolic representation of us, so not actually look like us (if that makes sense). This was a pretty fun activity.
My ART 233 class is going to be very good for me. I have never really considered myself much of a drawer, so the opportunity to work on developing this skill excites me. For our first class, we sat for two hours and drew this cluster of large, metal easels. It was hard because there were so many lines to pay attention to. Our homework is to do two more two-hour drawings. So far, I have completed one of my boots. I think it turned out pretty well.
I look forward to creating even more art as the term goes on. Hopefully I can take some pictures of it and post them on my blog later in the term!
