This week, I went to the Saturday Market for the first time in several years. The Saturday Market in Eugene is huge, and you can find anything from fresh produce and flowers to tie dye t-shirts and hemp bracelets. It is full of students, hippies, artists, musicians, and families. It is so great to sit back and watch as all of these different people interact with each other and connect over similar interests.
I went to the Saturday Market with one of my best friends, Brandi. I have not been since about my sophomore year and she had never been, so we decided it was about time we go. Since we are both graduating in four weeks, we are trying to soak up every little piece of Eugene we can before we leave. The Saturday Market overtakes 4 blocks of Downtown Eugene, where streets are shut down and tents set up in order to showcase all of the vendors.
After the Saturday Market, we also went to the 5th Street Market. This is a set of boutiques, cafes, and stores in Downtown Eugene that is located only a few blocks from Saturday Market. After a breakfast and a few hours window shopping, I got in the car and headed to Salem to spend the rest of the weekend with my mom and family for Mother's Day.
Today, my family and I went to breakfast at the Flight Deck-my mom's favorite restaurant in Salem. It is located right next to the airport, so we spent the morning eating some great food while watching the airplanes land and take off. We then loaded up the Jeep and headed to the Oregon Coast to Lincoln City. It has become a Sime family tradition to go to the beach for Mother's Day. This year, it was a BEAUTIFUL day with clear skies and the sun shinning bright. In addition to my mom, dad, and older sister Kristen, we also brought along the family dog, Striker. It is a tough decision to figure out who likes the beach more, but at the end of the day I think we all agree the dog has the most fun running on the sand and meeting new dogs.
It has been a great and relaxing weekend, but now it is time to return to Eugene for a busy week. I have two midterms this week, and a huge event for Alpha Kappa Psi on Sunday. We are hosting our third annual Silent Auction to fundraise money for the Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Valley. Last year, we raised over $2,000 for the organization, and we hope to raise even more this year.
For those of you who live in Eugene, we would love to see you at our Silent Auction. We have some great baskets put together, including a wine tour and some autographed donations from Oregon athletes. The event is being held Sunday May 16 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Gerlinger Lounge on the University of Oregon campus. Visit www.uoregon.edu/~akpsi for more details, or email our event manager, Meagan Stuart at mstuart@uoregon.edu
