Last Day of Peer Advising

As dead week has come and quickly gone, I realize that this is the last week for me as a peer advisor in the business school. After four terms of holding office hours, I find myself with very bittersweet feelings. I have really, really enjoyed my time in the advising office and have met some great people through this program-the four amazing advisors and all of my fellow peers. I will really miss working with them all. I also find that, once again, one of my "lasts" has been checked off my senior check list. This "last" caught me very off-guard, and I didn't even realize it was my last advising session yesterday until one of my fellow peers asked me if I was sad it was my last day. When I went to answer him, I realized that although it meant that next term I was getting an additional 5 hours per week of my life back, I thought back to all of the experiences this office has brought me.

The peer advising program was one of the best choices I made while in college. Not only has it been an amazing learning experience for me, but I have met and gotten to know some of my best friends through this program. Whenever I write cover letters or go in for interviews, I continuously find myself talking about my experiences in the advising office-problem solving, organization, people skills, multi-tasking, and conflict resolution. A student will come into the office with a lot of questions, and I slowly and patiently help them problem by problem, question by question until they leave with everything they needed. It has been a truly rewarding experience, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. I like knowing I have been able to help my peers and also give back to the business school that has given so much to me so far.

I am writing this blog from the advising office right now, and realizing all the great times I have had within these four walls. Whether it is laughing hysterically as Matt puts out a fire in the ash tray outside with Dixie cups full of water, talking sports with the boys, listening to the crazy anti-LTD man ride his bike and yell down 13th avenue, trying to explain my Twitter addiction to the new peers, or frantically cramming for my sports business midterm with Tonya (on more than one occasion), this office has always been a haven and like home for me within Lillis. It has been a place where I have had to overcome my fear of talking to people over the phone, and a place that has taught me how to interact with people who are not very happy with you. As I said before, through all of the good times and bad, it has been one of the best experiences of my college career. It is rare to be a part of a group of people so driven, dedicated, and passionate about helping others. Thank you to everyone who has made my peer advising experience a great one. I hope the next generation of peer advisors will have the amazing experience I did, and I wish them all the best of luck!!
