Today was the Eugene Marathon. This year, my dad ran and finished the half marathon! Wohoo! He has run the full Portland Marathon two years in a row with my grandpa, and is training for it again this October. Last year at the Portland Marathon, my grandpa (who is now 76 years old) ran the marathon fast enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon! My dad has been training really hard over the last few months, and his goal is to qualify for Boston at the Portland Marathon this year.
Well today my dad was an all-star and ran the half marathon at pace (1 hour 47 minutes!). He made it look easy coming into Hayward Field for the last 300 meters of the race. Now all he has to do is run that fast for another 13.1 miles to qualify. No big deal, right pops? My grandpa, meanwhile, ran the full Avenue of the Giants Marathon in California to continue his training. I am so proud of them!
Earlier in the weekend was the Oregon Relays. My little sister Katie, who runs track at Eastern Washington, competed in this meet, so it was great to see her back in Oregon and in action. She earned a personal record for the season running the 100 hurdles, so go Katie go!
Eugene definitely earned its nickname for Track Town USA this weekend! After being at Hayward for a good part of the weekend, I definitely was inspired to hit the pavement and go for a run of my own. Who knows, maybe I will join in the Sime Family tradition and participate in the Portland Marathon this year
