Here are three fabulous upcoming events I'll be participating in, and if you're in the Eugene area, you should come, too! Note: these are in reverse chronological order to save some exciting news for last. So hang in there, folks.

  1. Powershift 2009 is hosting one of the ten national conferences here in Eugene! The discussions on environmental policy and local action opportunities will be taking place November 6-8th, and is being hosted by some of our own UO student leaders. Please check out their website for more information: http://west.powershift09.org
  2. Choral Extravaganza October 25th at 7pm at First United Methodist Church. This is a benefit concert of 6-7 different choirs to support the UO Wesley Center. This year, the bishop of the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church will be joining us. This is a huge honor, and we hope that the public will show up in support. The Wesley Center has been an extremely important home for me in these last three years, and is feeling the constraints of the economic downturn. I'll be speaking, and there will be cookies! We'd all love to see you there.
  3. Item number three is very near and dear to my heart. Ladies and gentlemen, we are announcing the release of NOMAD magazine, 2009! Five o'clock on Wednesday, October 14th on the second floor of the Duck Store, participants and contributors will be celebrated at a magazine Release Party, which will include the announcement of next year's NOMAD topic, some words from Comparative Literature bigwigs (like our editor, Max Rayneard) and an opportunity to have your FREE COPIES OF THE MAGAZINE SIGNED BY THE AUTHORS.

Please forgive the capitalization. But friends, remember all those blogs about NOMAD from last year? I agonized over that essay: it ate up my free time and consumed my imagination. Images of ghosts and other undeathly figures danced in my imagination. I threw a huge amount of effort into my essay "La Llorona Cries for Me: Chicana Feminist Redefinitions of a Latin American Ghost." Writing that essay changed how I think about literature and literary theory, and inspired me to continue to advance my interest in academic writing. Now, finally, the UNDEAD edition of NOMAD will be in my possession, in print, and ready to display prominently as proof of a hard job completed and published.

So if you would like a copy, please show up for the release party. Show up and tell me you heard about it on my blog, and I'll not only faint from pleased surprise, I'll even sign your copy!

Well that's it for now, folks. Proof again that this community has a lot going on, and that we don't have to work to stay busy. Show your support: show up!

Hi Tiah, I haven't read that book. I'll look it up for sure! After writing this paper, La Llorona is one of my favorite characters of all time. Thanks so much for the recommendation and the comment! Katie

Katie - I'm excited to read your paper. I love the llorona myth. Have you ever read Clarissa Pinkola Estés' take on it in the book Women Who Run with Wolves? Congratulations on your publication! ~ Tiah
