My family and I just returned from our trip to the mountains, and it is officially safe to say that I could use a nap. We were only there for a night but I am still spent from yesterday's activities.
I have never really been much of a hiker, but against my will I was coerced into taking a family hike up one of the trails that winds around Beaver Creek Mountain. The trail was about six miles long all together-three miles in each direction. My legs were exhausted and some parts of the trail were difficult to pass over, the prize waiting at the top was a gorgeous lake, being kept full by melting snow water. I have to say that I enjoy the winter a little more, when I can take a chairlift to the top of the mountain, but the scenery was amazing and the views gorgeous.
After hiking down we took a little stroll through the village, which I found to be much less crowded during the summer months. The weather was great and people were enjoying the sun shine all over the town.
Back at the hotel I decided I needed to relax in the pool for a while. Accompanied by my brother we went outside and found that since our last visit the hotel had added a basketball hoop to the side of the pool. What was supposed to be a period of relaxation turned into a heated game of one on one. I was victorious in my efforts (probably because I am twice his size), and we had both worked up quite an appetite from our pool battle.
We ate dinner at a mexican restaurant called Fiesta, a family favorite, where I plowed through my dinner and half of my brother's. I like to think of myself as a garbage disposal, figuratively of course, because everyone in my family knows to send their left overs in my direction.
After a delicious meal we headed back to the hotel so we could watch the remainder of the Rockies game. From my past blogs you can reach the conclusion that the Rockies have been struggling in recent weeks. What I witnessed last night is the story of the season for the Rockies. Down 5-2 in the top of the ninth inning, our third baseman Ian Stewart hit a three-run home run to bring the game back to a tie. After holding the Pirates to nothing in the bottom of the ninth, soon to be hall-of-famer Todd Helton belted a two-run blast to give the Rockies a two-run lead. All they needed was three outs and they would be victorious. That was apparently too much to ask for our not-so-reliable closer Huston Street, who gave up a three run home run in the bottom of 10, ending the great comeback attempt mounted by the offense. With our pitchers struggling as of late, we just can't seem to score enough runs. The Rockies are in the middle of their last game in Pittsburgh as we speak. With a five run lead in the fifth inning, I am still worried...
Hopefully they can get it turned around at home, and start heading down the path to Rocktober.
