At the beginning of the winter term one of my friends asked me if I would like to go to Lake Shasta in California during memorial day weekend. I have never been before so of course I obliged. At the time I was excited but even the thought of spring term seemed like it would take forever to come. As this spring term is flying by we are now in week eight and memorial day is only two weekends away.
The Shasta planning has been kicked in to high gear as I have a laundry list of things to get done before we leave. All of the payments have been submitted - now it is just a matter of getting all of the preparatory work done. On my car dashboard is a strange "check engine" light that recently come on. I plan to go have that checked out before we embark on our journey. One of my roommates has been to Lake Shasta before and he told me that a sturdy pair of sandals is a must. All I have is a flimsy pair of thongs so I will likely need to buy another pair. I need to buy some sort of lawn chair as well. I was informed that a large portion of the day is taken up by lounging around in the sun. I don't want to have to lay down on the hard floor of the boat so I need something to relax in.
The only thing that is out of our control is the weather. I would assume that the weather is usually nice during this time of the year but I have heard from a friend that went two years ago that it can also get kind of rainy. However, I'd like to think I am the kind of guy who can have a good time in rain or sunshine. I have only heard great things about the Shasta experience and I can't wait to have my own.
While Shasta is coming up, my fraternity's philanthropy is this Saturday. The event planning has been moving along just fine and it should be a successful event. I am not on a volleyball team but I will be there all day helping out and enjoying the delicious barbeque. All of the event's proceeds will be given to LIVESTRONG, the organization founded by Lance Armstrong to fight cancer. I was initially bummed that our event was being moved from Autzen to the indoor Moshofsky Center, but looking at the weather right now it is probably for the best.
Yesterday our Allen Hall PR team held our "How To..." event for Habitat for Humanity. I don't think we could have picked a worse day to hold an outdoor event. It was raining for the entire duration of our event. Regardless of the weather, students were still interested in our free give-a-ways and multiple people stopped by to observe the demonstrations. While the school year comes to an end, this was a good event to create more awareness for our client, Habitat for Humanity, before students leave for the summer. In doing this we were also able to promote our sponsors who provided us with the free goods to hand out. All around the event was a success, I just wish the sun had decided to show up.
