Guys Night at The Rockies Game

Because I work at a lot of the Rockies games, I don't tend to go to too many as a spectator. Last night my dad and I went to a Rockies game against the Cubs for only my second game of the summer. It's always fun to go to a game when the stadium is packed. For the most part Coors Field doesn't usually fill up for games. However, when the Cubs, Yankees or Red Sox come to town, the stadium is packed full for every game of the series. These three teams are arguably the most popular in major league baseball, and they have enormous fan bases because of it. I wish last night's game was all Rockies fans, but I have to admit that there were just as many if not more Cubs fans at the game.

We crushed some Subway subs on the way to the game and made a pit stop by a Lids store so that my dad could buy a fresh new Rockies hat to sport at the game. After we found some cheap parking we used my employee tickets that I get for free to get into the game. We grabbed a couple cold ones and made our way up to our seats. We were up in the third deck down the third base line almost to the mile high marker that wraps its way around the stadium. It is great that I get free tickets to the games, but the organization doesn't usually give employees the top picks for seats. It's ok though, because you can still have a great view of the game from anywhere in the stadium.

Going into the bottom of the ninth inning the game was tied as the Rockies were coming to bat. First up for the good guys was our left fielder Carlos Gonzalez, who has made enormous leaps from last season and is currently on a hot streak. On the first pitch of the at bat Carlos hit a walk off home run into the third deck in right field. The ball was hit so far the Cubs' right fielder didn't even make an effort at the ball. Hitting a walk off home run is impressive enough, but that home run gave Carlos Gonzalez a cycle for the game. For those who don't know, a cycle is when a batter gets a single, a double, a triple and a home run all in one game. I might have to check the stat book again, but I have been told before that hitting a cycle is more uncommon than pitching a perfect game. Regardless it's very impressive and it looks like the Rockies are finally recovering from the skid that set them back so far in the standings.

The post game mood was great as "sweep" chants could be heard all around the stadium. The baseball season is moving along and I hope I'll get to watch some Rockies playoff baseball in Eugene (and hopefully remind my friends from the bay area that the Giants have yet again failed to make the playoffs).
