Finally, the dream has been realized, and the Oregon Ducks football team has received its first ever birth to the BCS National Title game, in which they will take on the Auburn Tigers as expected.
The game at Oregon State yesterday at times had some upset potential to it, especially after Cliff Harris fumbled the first punt of the game. The Beavers were the first to draw blood, scoring on a short pass to the right towards the end of the first quarter. The Ducks were able to bounce back with points of their own, eventually pulling away from the Beavers and allowing our defense to put the clamps on the OSU offense. As the game was winding down it became apparent that victory was in the bag, and all of the Ducks fans from the Oregon section slowly made their way down to the field wall in preparation to celebrate Oregon's perfect season.
With only minutes remaining in the game, Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly was given the traditional water cooler treatment, as senior wide receiver D.J. Davis dumped water on the commander in chief. At this point the dream was realized, and the national championship became a reality for Duck fans around the world.
The game is about five weeks away, and that should give our squad plenty of time to game plan for the Tigers, and Cam Newton. Newton will most likely be the Heisman winner this season, and is a threat on the ground and in the air. If Oregon's defense can find some way to contain Newton's abilities, we have a good shot of winning the game. The college football analysts around the country have already begun to anticipate a high-scoring game, as both teams' offenses have demonstrated that they can score at will this season.
The hardest part about making it down to the national championship game will be actually getting a ticket to the game. My plane tickets are taken care of, but I don't even want to begin to wonder how much the game tickets will cost. I am hoping that maybe there is some way that I can get a ticket through the athletic department as I did for this game, but I won't get my hopes up because the national championship is a whole different animal.
I know that the Ducks will be playing in the game, but part of me feels like the reality of the situation hasn't set in yet. I have watched the national championship game on television for as long as I can remember, and I never thought that one day I would be a part of a university whose football team is in the game. This year's national title game could literally be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that's why I will do whatever I have to to be a part of it.
My own personal intramural championship is only a few hours away, and pretty soon it'll be time for me to head over to Autzen to get taped up for the game!
