Everyone loves having an excuse to celebrate, which is why the fifth of May is so enjoyable. Cinco de Mayo is a special day of celebration for all of those who are of mexican heritage. I always thought the this day was a celebration of Mexico declaring its independence, but I recently learned that it is simply the anniversary of the day on which the Mexican army destroyed the French army in Mexico. That sounds like a good reason to celebrate to me, and many other Americans take advantage of this holiday, especially around the college campuses. The holiday really has no relevance to our country at all, but it gives everyone an excuse to kick back and relax. I personally enjoy this day because it gives me a chance to enjoy part of the mexican culture. Margaritas are certain to be a popular special at the bar today, and the best in town are over at the Campus Cantina. I already love Mexican food as it is, but there is no better day than today to enjoy some fine mexican cooking. I may even head over the Dollar Tree so see if I can snag a cheap sombrero to get into the spirit of the holiday. Like all other holidays, it only comes around once a year, and I won't let it go to waste.
This week is full of treats, because not only is Cinco de Mayo upon us once again, but all of the best restaurants from around Eugene have all come together on campus for another epic street fair! Oh yeah, it's back, and I get wait to wet my beak on the action. Yesterday was undoubtedly the best day Eugene has seen in 2011, as my car thermometer was over 70 when I left work. It was a perfect day to be down at the fair, and apparently the rest of the student body thought so too. There were people out and about everywhere enjoying the mix of sunshine and good food. Deciding what food to eat at the street fair is honestly one of the hardest decisions that I make all year long. Every time I think I know what I want, I look in either direction and see something that looks just as scrumptious. Given the significance of today, I'll probably try to get some mexican food at the fair, but you never know with all of the endless options. The street fair is one of the best times of the year, and I'm definitely going to take advantage of it, being that it's my last one.
This weekend is lining up nicely, as I'll be spending my day on Saturday over by the river front fields playing in a day-long softball tournament for a philanthropy. Alpha Chi Omega holds a huge softball tournament for their philanthropy, and it is definitely one of the most fun in my opinion. All of the proceeds from philanthropies go to a deserving organization, so I usually try to participate whenever I can, especially when it involves softball.
Hopefully the nice weather will be here for the weekend, but for now, it's time to do some celebrating!
